Samsung Electronics first released the Samsung Galaxy S in 2010. This was the first of their successful Galaxy S series, a touchscreen enabled smartphone with Android mobile operating system. Galaxy S features smartphone functions including text messaging, email, web browsing, portable media player, Wi-Fi connectivity and the use of third party web applications or “apps”. It sports a 4-inch capacitive Super AMOLED screen, an active-matrix organic light-emitting diode with an integrated digitiser. The Super AMOLED appears to give the screen deeper colour and contrast giving the on-screen image a rich and sharp appearance.
Through AMOLED technology, Samsung is able to provide a mobile phone that consumes significantly less power some other smartphones on the market, such as the Apple iPhone. Another advantage the Galaxy has over the Apple iPhone is that it supports external memory expansion via MicroSD. The Android operating system has been very popular with developers due to its open nature and currently there are some 1.5 million apps available in the Google Play Store. Samsung launched the Samsung Galaxy S3 (S III) in Australia in 2012 with a whole list of features including Direct Call, Smart Alert, Social Tag, S Beam, Samsung Link, Best Photo and two of the coolest features Smart Stay and S Voice.
Smart Stay recognises when you’re looking at the phone and stays awake by maintaining a bright display (and sleep when you’re not looking at it). And S Voice enables the user to give voice commands to the smartphone, a bit like Apple’s Siri. The Galaxy S3 came with a Quad Core Application Processor 1.4GHz, HD Super AMOLED 4.8 inch screen and ready with Android Ice Cream Sandwich (ICS). In 2013 Samsung served up the Galaxy S4 which was widely reviewed as the best smartphone of its time. Most notable are the Full HD Super AMOLED 5 inch screen with Gorilla Glass 3, Quad Core 1.9GHz processor, Android Jelly Bean OS, 13MP rear camera plus 2MP front camera.
Adding to this there are nine sensors in total, a leap from the five sensors in its predecessor, which include Accelerometer, Geomagnetic, Gyro, RGB light, Barometer, Proximity, Gesture, Temperature and Humidity. These allow for cool Galaxy S4 features such as Smart Pause and Smart Scroll, Air View/Air Gesture along with use for the diverse apps available. The only major negative is it looks very much like its predecessor the Galaxy S3, as well as looking ‘cheap’ with its plastic design. When Samsung released their Galaxy S5 they really stepped up in terms of design, and the general consensus was very positive. Samsung’s Galaxy S5 smartphone came with a 5.1 inch Full HD Super AMOLED- a clearer, deeper more vivid screen. Powered by a 2.4GHz Quad Core application processor and Android Kitkat OS. There are now ten sensors which work to enhance the user’s experience: Accelerometer, Gyro, Proximity, Compass, Barometer, Hall, RGB ambient light, Gesture, Fingerprint and Heart Rate Monitor. A striking feature of the Galaxy S5 is being ‘dust and water resistant’… but remember folks, that’s water resistant and not waterproof. They are not the same.
The Ultra Power Saving Mode and fingerprint scanner are also pretty cool. And the camera has also been upgraded to a 16MP with Isocell technology. In 2015 the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge were unveiled. This time Samsung had made some major changes in the Galaxy S Series. They’ve finally gone ‘metal’ rather than ‘plastic’ which gives the S5 a really premium look and feel. And the S5 Edge just brings it up a notch in terms of designing a new look with its curved edge screen. Once again Samsung have utilised their Super AMOLED technology brilliantly with a 5.1 inch screen, images are crisp and clearer than ever. Both S5 and S5 Edge are powered by a 1.5GHz or 2.1GHz Octa-Core Application Processor, the fastest processor on the mobile phone market. Unfortunately for some reason this generation of Galaxy S no longer has MicroSD compatibility which is a real step backward for Samsung. This functionality was a real decider for many users when choosing between phones.
Many have also voiced disappointment at the change from a removable battery to a non-removable battery in the Galaxy S5 and S5 Edge. The two worst points of the Apple iPhone seems to have been adopted for this latest generation by Samsung. Like many other handheld gadgets, Samsung Galaxy S is prone to accidents such as drops and liquid damage.
